USDA invests in possible community-owned store

BOZEMAN — In a significant step toward increasing access to fresh, locally sourced food in Butte, the Butte Food Co-Op has been awarded $149,280 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development. This funding will support the development of a community-owned cooperative grocery store, helping to improve food security and empower residents through collective ownership.

According to the USDA, many Butte residents currently face limited access to fresh, affordable food options, particularly in underserved areas of the city. The BFC aims to address this gap while supporting local food producers and fostering community ownership.

The BFC is planning two key initiatives with this funding, including hiring a development coordinator who will lead efforts to raise private investment, allowing the BFC to launch its capital campaign and secure critical funding. The cooperative will also conduct a thorough review of potential sites, create architectural designs, and update financial projections to ensure the project's success.

"This is a great opportunity for Butte. It will bring fresh, nutritious food, support local farmers, and give residents a stake in their local food system," said Kathleen Williams, USDA Rural Development Montana State Director.
