A big announcement for UTEP's football program, early Sunday morning the university revealed its parting ways with head football coach Dana Dimel.

Dimel saying goodbye to the Miners with a 3 to 9-season record.

The announcement of Dimel's departure from the program came just a few hours after the team lost to Liberty in a Saturday night game.

Officials with the university released a statement in which they thanked Dimel for his hard work and dedication to the program over the last six years.

Utep's Director of Athletics Jim Senter said the program has seen an improvement in academic metrics.

Senter also reflected on Dimel pushing the team after he was hired, before the coach was hired the program had been on a losing streak.

However, officials said they have not seen the improvements necessary within the program that would make the team competitive or lead them to a championship win.

Officials added that they think a change in leadership is needed for the program to move forward.

Students said they agree, and think it's time for change within the program.

“I think it like deserved, I don’t think he did a very good job unfortunately I think they could definitely find someone better,” said Catch Marginot a student at UTEP

A national search is now underway for the next head football coach for the university.
