UTSA cancels Friday classes for 'Day of Reflection' amid student stress, campus tragedies

SAN ANTONIO - Officials at theUniversity of Texas at San Antonio made the decision to cancel all classes on Friday.

In a social media post, they say this is a "Day of Reflection" due to the "stress and concern for many of you right now."

We know there are deep concerns about the well-being of members of our community as we witness an increase in stress, anxiety and uncertainty across our campuses," said university officials on social media. "We're writing to share how we plan to do better and be better as an anchor of support for you.

UTSA students living at University Oaks remain on high alert after several incidents at the apartment complex.

An allegedsexual assault occurred on Oct. 6 at University Oaks. A male entered the apartment through an unlocked window, assaulted a female resident, and then fled the scene.

UTSA officials got a report on Nov. 3 of a suspicious man at the same housing complex.

And on Wednesday, a student was found dead in a campus parking garage. Officials confirmed that thedoctoral student's death was by suicide.

We've heard you, and we are committed to taking swifter, stronger actions to address these needs. Tomorrow, to support you and our entire campus community, we are canceling all classes to share a Day of Reflection for us to pause, reflect and care for one another. We encourage you to come to campus, lean into resources and participate in free support programming throughout the day.
