BRECKSVILLE, Ohio – The Brecksville Planning Commission has granted preliminary approval for Valor Square, an outdoor recreation area proposed for the mixed-use section of Valor Acres .

Approval came Oct. 24 after a brief public hearing that brought no comments from residents.

On Oct. 3, Mackenzie Makepeace – director of mixed-use development with DiGeronimo Development , the Valor Acres developer – said the latest Valor Square plan had changed little from previous versions.

Makepeace said DiGeronimo did add landscaping around a seating area to distinguish it more sharply from other parts of Valor Square.

A children's climbing structure was included in the latest version of Valor Square. It's uncertain whether the climbing structure will make it into the final plan.

"We're still working through that," Makepeace told the commission. "We want to make is safe for kids to climb on."

DiGeronimo is still trying to determine what types of plants and trees will be included in Valor Square, Josh Decker, project executive with DiGeronimo, told the commission Oct. 24.

Valor Square would feature an indoor pavilion, stage, fire pits, seating, picnic tables, a children's play area of some kind, natural grass and turf.

Valor Square would sit to the north and slightly west of an office building at the very corner of Brecksville and Miller roads. The square would not be for the city at large but for residents and businesses in Valor Acres.

The pavilion in Valor Square would measure a little less than 2,000 square feet. Business tenants and restaurants in Valor Acres would use the pavilion for corporate events and popup eateries or cafés.

The pavilion would include restrooms and would have glass walls and garage doors that can be opened when the weather is nice. The back of the pavilion might include a public art section.

The stage would feature live outdoor entertainment.
