Nov. 8—GREENSBURG — Veterans Day is Monday. It's time to honor and thank those who have served in the military for their sacrifices and dedication.
In Greensburg, line up for the Veterans Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. The parade steps off at 11 a.m.
American Legion Post 129 will serve lunch after the parade at the Legion, 329 E. Main Street, Greensburg. Lunch will be catered by CT Catering, compliments of Decatur County Memorial Hospital.
On Monday, local veterans are invited to stop by the Decatur County Community Foundation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a token of appreciation. For the fifth year in a row, the DCCF is offering gift cards to local veterans to thank them for their service.
The gift cards are made available thanks to the Ella Jo Briggs Veterans Field of Interest Fund. Mrs. Briggs began the fund in 2017 to support projects, activities and services for Decatur County veterans.
"We encourage local veterans to stop by the Foundation Office for a token of appreciation," Decatur County Community Foundation Executive Director Tami Wenning said. "We hope to reach as many veterans as possible."
This year's gift cards will be a choice between Needler's Fresh Market, Love Local, and Wal-Mart.
Veterans simply need to stop by the Foundation office at 101 E. Main Street to pick up their gift card. They can also call ahead at 812-662-6364 for curbside delivery.
"We are very honored that Mrs. Briggs entrusted the Foundation to help her support her favorite cause — veterans — forever," Wenning said. "We hope many of Decatur County's veterans will stop by, receive a token of thanks, and share their stories with us this coming Veterans Day."
Rushville American Legion Post 150's celebration begins at 6 p.m. Saturday with hors d'oeuvres, cake and a live band at the Legion, 221 N. Perkins Street.

Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
According to the Veterans Administration, Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.
While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military — in wartime or peacetime.
Their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and those who served — not only those who died — have sacrificed and done their duty.
