INLAND EMPIRE, CA — A felon with a history of violence went on a rampage over the long Thanksgiving weekend, killing his girlfriend, ex-girlfriend, and a man; he also shot a fourth person who survived the attack, according to authorities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Louis Peter Hernandez III, 41, of San Bernardino was charged with multiple counts of murder in connection with the violence that spanned both Inland Empire counties, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

Around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, Fontana police were called to a residence in the 15500 block of Eastwind Avenue. There they found a man and woman suffering fatal gunshot wounds. The woman was later determined to be Hernandez's girlfriend, according to the DA's office.

Before police caught up with him, however, Hernandez killed again — this time in Riverside County, authorities said.

At approximately 9:38 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, the California Highway Patrol responded to a "shots-fired" incident at the Mission Boulevard Park and Ride at the edge of Jurupa Valley and Ontario. When officers arrived, they found a woman shot dead inside a silver 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Investigators learned the woman was Hernandez's ex-girlfriend.

Seated in a 2003 Nissan Altima, a man was also found shot — but alive — at the Park and Ride. The CHP said the male victim was "uninvolved."

None of the victims' identities were released.

Hernandez, according to the CHP, fled the Park and Ride by jumping into the bed of a pickup truck that was stopped at a red light.

The truck driver traveled into Ontario and when he stopped Hernandez jumped out. The motorist called 911, and Ontario police responded. Officers "quickly arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody," according to the CHP.

During a search of Hernandez, a firearm was found "and is believed to be the weapon used in the shootings," the CHP reported.

Law enforcement agencies in the region are looking at Hernandez as a possible suspect in separate cases, according to the CHP.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office reported that Hernandez is a felon who was on probation and post-release community supervision at the time of the shootings. He is "a known gang member with a history of violence including auto theft, assault with a firearm, and evading a police officer," the agency said.

Hernandez was charged in San Bernardino County with three counts of murder and a single count of assault with a firearm. Additional charges may be filed pending the investigation involving the man shot in Riverside County, according to the DA's office.

Special allegations for prior felonies and special circumstances have been filed for multiple murders, which create the potential for a death penalty case, the DA's office reported.

Hernandez pleaded not guilty during a Nov. 29 arraignment. No bail has been set for him. He is due back in court Dec. 4.
