Waco-area news briefs: Sic 'em Science Day set for Saturday at Mayborn Museum

Sic 'em Science Day

Sic 'em Science Day 2024 will start at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mayborn Museum, 1300 S. University Parks Drive.

Baylor University scientists will showcase their latest research through hands-on experiences. Attendees will be able to engage with interactive exhibits, participate in experiments and meet the people driving innovation at Baylor.

The event will also include the Chemistry Magic Show, where science and spectacle collide in a mesmerizing display of chemical reactions.

Walk to End Alzheimer's

The 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer's will start at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Legends Crossing, 5100 Crosslake Parkway.

Registration and check-in will start at 9 a.m., with the opening ceremony at 10.

Family-friendly activities and sponsor information will be available along the walk.

Ham radio event

The Speegleville Amateur Radio Club will hold a free ham radio event starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at Hewitt Park, 801 S. Hewitt Drive, as part of the worldwide Boy Scout Jamboree on the Air. The club will set up a ham radio station and help participants connect with operators around the world. Scouts, Cub Scouts and the general public are invited to attend.

Fall Fossil Festival

The Waco Mammoth National Monument's annual Fall Fossil Festival will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the park, 6220 Steinbeck Bend Drive.

The free event will include family-friendly activities, local exhibitors, live camels, pumpkin decorating, treats, food and a mock dig pit experience.

Tours of the Dig Shelter will also be available for the regular fee.

Dan Patrick legislative preview

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick will preview the 89th legislative session during the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce's State of the State Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 29 in the Baylor Club at McLane Stadium, 1001 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

State Sen. Brian Birdwell will introduce Patrick.

Brew at the Zoo

Brew at the Zoo will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cameron Park Zoo, 1701 N. Fourth St.

Cost is $35 for members, $45 for nonmembers, $15 for designated drivers. Tickets are available at cameronparkzoo.com .

Beer from regional breweries will be available, and food from local food trucks will be available for purchase.

No one younger than 21 will be permitted to enter the event.

Brazos Forum

The Brazos Forum will hold "The Evolution of American Art" from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Mayborn Museum, 1300 S. University Parks Drive.

Ticket costs range from $75 to $135.

The event will include illustrated talks on how American art evolved, and some of the palatial mansions that developed along the way.

Futsal signup

Registration will close Friday for Waco Parks and Recreation's Youth Futsal League, open to boys and girls ages 4 through high school.

Cost is $50 per player. The league will start Nov. 2, with games played at Waco community centers.

Pumpkin Fest

Wilbert Austin Sr. Park, 401 Hood St., will hold Pumpkin Fest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The free event will feature face and pumpkin painting, pies, snacks and hot dogs. Costumes are encouraged.

Beverly Hills Trunk or Treat

Beverly Hills City Hall, 3418 Memorial Drive, will hold its annual Trunk or Treat from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Mooreville fish fry

Mooreville Methodist Church will hold its annual fish fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the church, 206 Farm-to-Market Road 2643 in Chilton.

Cost is $15 per plate, available for dine in or to go.

Public health conference

Registration will close Friday for the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District's second annual conference, Plug into Community Conversations.

The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 6 at 225 W. Waco Drive. Cost is $75 for adults, $35 for students.

The conference aims to continue closing the gap between theory and practice, equipping participants with actionable steps to have hard conversations the community needs to improve health status. Sessions will cover communication strategies, maternal health, mental wellness and education. A question-and-answer panel will discuss burnout and wellness in the workplace.

Health fair

Church Under the Bridge's semiannual health fair will run from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, followed by a meal and worship, at the church's regular meeting spot under Interstate 35 between Fourth and Fifth streets.

Various health-related booths hosted by Baylor University's public health department, McLennan Community College and other local organizations will be present to serve the community.
