‘We never gave up’ – Ulster coach Richie Murphy proud of the character his team showed in last-gasp win over Glasgow

The clock was showing 84 minutes when replacement scrum half Dave Shanahan's 84th minute try sealed the deal, earning the long-serving squad member the Player of the Match award.

"(We showed) Character," said a relieved Murphy.

"We weren't anywhere near our best, and we've found a way to win.

"We never gave up, really rolled our sleeves up in the last 25 minutes and put Glasgow under pressure.

"We probably weren't accurate enough. Over the course of the whole game, we're probably a little bit disappointed with how we performed.

"But we were put under a lot of pressure, and we've come up with some good answers at the end.

"The players coming on in the second half added, which is exactly what we wanted to do, and a special mention for Dave Shanahan who had a very good end to the game," he added.

"He's very much a team man. I'm only here a short time but I've always seen 'Shanners' in and around the team.

"He's very professional, he works really hard. He sets standards all through the week.

"It's no surprise when someone like that steps up and fills that hole towards the back end of the game.

"We're delighted for him. It's a big moment. Delighted for the team as well because we played a really good team."

The Ulster coach also praised the impact of the bench in getting Ulster into the game and ultimately doing enough to win it.

"Going into the game we knew we were going to have to be good for the whole length of the game, not going hard early and then not having guys there to finish it off.

"Bringing the likes of Tom O'Toole and Andy Warwick on, young James McCormick in the front-row, Izzy (Cormac Izuchukwu) coming on and giving us a little bit of carry with (Harry) Sheridan, those guys are starting to become more experienced and did really well at the back end of the game.

"Again, it goes back to the character that they've shown. They could have easily walked away from that game with a point and been happy enough but the dressing room downstairs is a very happy place at the moment.

"There's loads to work on, we're nowhere near happy with the performance but we'll take the win and we'll move on.

"Getting off to a win is what we set out to do. Glasgow hit us early on, put us through some good phases.

"With the strength and power in their carrying, they were getting over the gain line. That's an area we're going to need to be better at going against the South African teams.

"Look, we stuck in the fight, and we found a way.

"It was massive. It comes down to character and the mentality, not giving up.

"We want to be a team that will throw everything we've got at the opposition and if the opposition are too good for us, we'll that's fine," the Ulster coach stated.
