Week 10 high school football recap | Riverheads rolls past Waynesboro
The Riverheads football team bounced back from a lopsided loss to Stuarts Draft and ended its regular season on a high note Friday with a 62-17 win over Waynesboro.
The Gladiators (8-2, 4-2 Shenandoah District) played the first 10 weeks of the season without an off week. Riverheads will have a bye during the final week of the regular season, giving the team extra rest heading into the Region 2B playoffs.
On Friday, Brady Boehm kicked off what would be a big night by hauling in a 77-yard touchdown reception from Levi Dunlap on the second play from scrimmage. Boehm went on to score a pair of rushing touchdowns to go along with his receiving score on offense and snag an interception on defense to lead the Gladiators.
Jonathan Talbott and Preston McCauley also scored two rushing touchdowns apiece, while Dunlap and Jackson Fitzgerald both found the end zone once for Riverheads.
Haden Morris threw two touchdown passes and kicked a field goal for Waynesboro (0-9, 0-5), which will try to avoid a winless season this Friday when it hosts district-leading Staunton at 7 p.m.
Staunton 24, Fort Defiance 21
The Storm kept their Shenandoah District championship and Region 3C playoff hopes alive with a come-from-behind win over the Indians.
Prior to Friday's game, Staunton (6-3, 4-1 Shenandoah District) lost one of the wins on its schedule after the VHSL reinstated three wins to Central (Woodstock) that had been previously forfeited. One of those previously forfeited wins came against Staunton in September.
The Storm looked to be heading for another loss on the field Friday after Fort Defiance (4-5, 2-3) took a double-digit lead in the second half. Indians quarterback Trey Miller scored the third of his three rushing touchdowns to give Fort a 21-10 lead in the third quarter.
But Staunton answered later in the stanza with a rushing touchdown from Marc Geffrard to make it a 21-17 game. With the Storm defense holding the Indians at bay, Geffrard scored the go-ahead touchdown with around five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, Staunton is tied with Stuarts Draft (7-2, 4-1) atop the Shenandoah District standings. The Storm will travel to winless Waynesboro on Friday, while the Cougars travel to Wilson Memorial for their regular-season finale on Friday at 7 p.m.
Fort Defiance, which is mired in a three-game losing streak, hosts Buffalo Gap in its regular season finale this Friday at 7 p.m.
