A group of over 70 organizations serving the LGBTQ+ community have released a joint statement of solidarity following the victory of former president Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
The signees represent both state-level and national organizations. The letter , which was hopeful in tone, emphasized the long history of the LGBTQ+ community's fight for its rights; the signatories pledged to continue that fight under a second Trump presidency.
"Ours is a long history of never backing down from a fight for our rights," the letter reads. "United in our strength, during the most difficult of times, we have pushed forward and achieved significant progress across the decades."
The letter continues, "For every member of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and for those who support us: We've got this. We've got us. No matter who you are, where you live, or the outcome of yesterday's election, today we are an LGBTQIA2S+ community united."
Some of the signatories include GLAAD, Lambda Legal, the Transgender Law Center, Equality Arizona, Equality Florida, and many local chapters of PFLAG.
Throughout the election, Trump attempted to distance himself from Project 2025 , a right-wing blueprint for a radical reshaping of the federal government were he to take office, written by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that has repeatedly sought to implement anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Project 2025, which the Brennan Center for Justice called "an unambiguous threat to American democracy and future elections," also includes several anti-LGBTQ+ initiatives, including plans to redefine gender at the federal level to recognize only "male" and "female" as assigned at birth, roll back LGBTQ+ discrimination protections, cut federal funding for gender-affirming care, and decimate reproductive rights.
Despite efforts to downplay his role or relationship to Project 2025, in the short time following his victory, Trump's allies have repeated that the right-wing agenda will be going into effect when Trump takes office .
Texas Republican official Bo French wrote on X Wednesday, "So can we admit now that we are going to implement Project 2025?"
"Now that the election is over I think we can finally say that yeah actually Project 2025 is the agenda. Lol," right-wing podcast host Matt Walsh shared on social media Wednesday.
Aside from its direct plans for the LGBTQ+ community, Project 2025 also includes plans to get rid of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which tracks hurricanes, deport immigrants, and most likely do away with the Affordable Care Act .
As a final note, the signatories on the letter emphasized the massive job ahead of them, and their duty to protect queer and trans people.
"We know that so much more work lies ahead of us," the letter reads. "Yet as an LGBTQIA2S+ movement, we will continue to work towards what we always have: a country where all LGBTQIA2S+ people are safe, seen, and accepted for who we truly are, without exception. We are here together, and we will move forward. We've got this. We've got us."
