When does the time change? Daylight saving time ends soon, get ready to 'fall back'

J.Nelson35 min ago

It's officially fall in the United States, which means it's almost time to ' fall back ' when daylight saving time ends.

For those ready to earn that extra hour of sleep, we'll have to wait a bit longer before the long-time practice ends this year.

When is the time change?

The clocks will officially fall back at 2 a.m. central time on Sunday, Nov. 3. When the clock strikes 2 a.m., they will revert to 1 a.m. local standard time, so we'll get an extra hour of sleep.

Sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour earlier on Nov. 3 than the day prior, with more light in the morning and less in the evening.

Will my phone adjust automatically to the time change?

iPhones and Androids with the clock set to "set automatically" will set the time automatically. This setting will also change the time when you are crossing time zones.

When do we 'spring forward' in 2025?

Barring any federal legislation, daylight saving time will begin again on March 9, 2025, at 2 a.m. central time, when the clocks will jump to 3 a.m. That cycle will continue until Nov. 2, 2025, when the clocks will fall back to standard time.

Why do we have daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time has occurred since 1966, when the Uniform Time Act was passed. The act established a standard for how time will be understood throughout the country.

Though founding father Benjamin Franklin introduced the idea of daylight saving time in 1784, the earliest recognized practices go back to Thunder Bay in Canada. According to the CBC , on May 1, 1908, residents of then-named Port Arthur, Ontario, turned their clocks forward by one hour, saying it was "beneficial to the community".

Eventually, other provinces in Canada followed suit, but Germany was the first country to officially use daylight saving time on April 30, 1916, 50 years before U.S. adoption.
