Why Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour’ Concert Film Will Be Even Longer on Streaming
Put on a pot of Frappuccino for the Swifites: Taylor Swift ‘s “The Eras Tour” concert film will be even longer on streaming than it was in theaters .
The theatrical version of “Eras” has a runtime of 2 hours and 49 minutes — not exactly “Oppenheimer” (3 hours) , but longer than “Napoleon” (2 hours, 38 minutes). When the concert movie debuts on streaming on December 13, it will be exactly three songs longer.
With the addition of “Wildest Dreams” (the “Taylor’s Version” track clocks in at 3 minutes, 40 seconds), “The Archer” (3:31), and “Long Live” (emphasis on the “long” here; it’s 5 minutes and 17 seconds), “The Eras Tour” on streaming will cross the three-hour threshold.
The added songs alone would push the film’s runtime to about 3 hours and 1 minute, though one should probably allow a few extra minutes for interstitials, introductions, and general theatrics. (And who knows, maybe more friendship bracelets.)
“Well, so, basically I have a birthday coming up and I was thinking a fun way to celebrate the year we’ve had together would be to make The Eras Tour Concert Film available for you to watch at home!” Swift posted to her social media accounts on Monday. “Very happy to be able to tell you that the extended version of the film including ‘Wildest Dreams,’ ‘The Archer’ and ‘Long Live’ will be available to rent on demand in the US, Canada & additional countries to be announced soon starting on ... you guessed it, December 13.”
We do not yet know the rental price or purchase price for “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” on PVOD (premium video-on-demand). We can assume it will be on all the ordinary rental/purchase platforms, like iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and via cable providers.
Yes, this is the at-home monetization round. It is unclear if “Eras” will simultaneously come out on DVD and Blu-ray. It would be a shame to miss the Christmas holiday, so any physical media for “Eras,” though oddly not (yet) mentioned by Swift, should not be far behind.
“Eras” will head to PVOD via Universal ( AMC’s distribution ends at theatrical); reps there did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for an official streaming runtime. We also asked NBCU reps if the company’s streaming-distribution deal gives Peacock first dibs on “The Eras Tour” in its next window, the SVOD (subscription video on-demand). No answer on that one either, though it’d be a great — albeit expensive — get for the fledgling streamer .
“Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” has pulled in nearly $180 million domestically over its seven weekends of showtimes . (Adult tickets cost $19.89, a nod to Swift’s massive album “1989” and her birth year, which is more than a typical movie-theater ticket.) It will return to AMCs and other theaters for an eighth weekend on Thursday.
