Why this photo of two drinks that cost $42.50 at a pub has sparked outrage as Aussies call for national boycott

Aussies have called for a boycott at pubs after a diner revealed they paid $42.50 for two pints of ginger ale at their local watering hole.

The Melbourne diner shared their frustration on Reddit and chose not to name the estbalishment.

A photograph showed two glasses ginger ale - it is unclear if they were alcholic.

Some Aussies explained the huge price could have been because it was alcoholic.

'It would have to be as it's cloudy and not a standard looking ginger ale,' one wrote.

'I'm assuming a craft ginger ale beer? Craft beer can vary in price and $20 for a pint isn't exactly out of the ordinary. In saying that it better be f***ing good!'

Some claimed the drink was mislabelled.

'There is no alcoholic ginger ale, only ginger beer gets the alcohol version,' one noted.

Another thought the high price could be explained by the alcohol content.

'Ginger beer's made the same way as beer is taxed,' they wrote.

'The ones like Matsos or Brookvale which are spirit based are taxed like RTD's so the price would be like the equivalent of buying a pint of Smirnoff ice.'

'You can get a keg of lager for 200 bucks but a keg of ginger beer can be over 500.'

A number of people suggested the only solution to surging prices was to refuse to pay and called on Aussies to stop spending their money.

'Wtf, seriously wtf... where did you go that charges this much ? My goodness, I would give it back and say no thank you,' one wrote.

'I have refused pints at this price before. I ask now,' another agreed.

'Refusing is easy. Just a polite, on second thoughts, no thank you.'

The idea was met with approval.

'Yeah just refuse. And refuse. And then don't go out. Needs to be a shift for pricing to drop,' a reply read.

'We need some kind of mass "refuse and walk away if it's over $15" movement,' another person suggested.

As exorbitant as the price was, some Reddit users claimed to have consumed even more expensive beverages.

'I went to a club on the weekend and they charged $56 for 2 vodka raspberries,' one said.

A second said the pub owners were not to blame.

'The Australian government tax on alcohol is wild,' the said.

'Pubs, bars and restaurants are not thriving right now. There are many trying to sell or just shutting their doors. Small business in Australia is tough.

'If you're paying more and therefore go out less you want the whole experience to be great. Service, drinks, food and vibes.

'I think things will balance back out but it has been a very hard few years for those that made it through Covid and still facing challenging times.'
