WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A Winston-Salem man accused of assaulting a woman is facing more charges after allegedly shooting a gun at police officers, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

At around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, officers came to the 500 block of Old Plantation Circle after getting a report of an assault involving a woman. The woman left the scene before police arrived.

When officers arrived at the scene, they tried to speak with the suspect, Tyson William Campbell, 37, of Winston-Salem, at the front door. Campbell then proceeded to fire a gun through the door in the direction of the officers.

None of the officers were hurt as a result of the gunfire and Campbell exited the home and surrendered peacefully a short time later.

Cambell was then taken into custody and charged with the following:

  • Attempted murder
  • Three counts of assault on a government official
  • Felony kidnapping
  • Felony assault by strangulation
  • Assault on a female
  • Misdemeanor crime of domestic violence
  • The WSPD's Criminal Investigations Division responded and has assumed investigative responsibility.

Campbell is being held without bond and will appear in court on Friday.

Winston-Salem Police Chief William H. Penn, Jr. released the following statement:

"I thank God that our Officers and the victim are safe. I am beyond angry that someone would try to cause harm to anyone, let alone our guardians in the community. I look forward to justice being served."
