W&J downs Otterbein in women’s hoops
Washington & Jefferson downed Otterbein, 68-51, on Saturday to win both games of the 2024 Hampton Inn by Hilton Women's Basketball Tipoff at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Canon-McMillan graduate Stellanie Loutsion was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and teammate Bryn Bezjak garnered all-tournament honors.
The Presidents led 18-9 after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 32-21 at halftime. W&J went on a 14-0 run in the second quarter.
Otterbein (1-1) cut the deficit to 42-41 in the third quarter before Bezjak and Katie Kovalchick went 2 for 2 at the foul line for a five-point lead heading into the fourth period.
The President outscored the Cardinals, 22-10, in the final frame, as Meghan Dryburgh and Kovalchick scored seven points apiece in the quarter.
Jaden Wan led W&J in scoring with 13 points on five field goals, including three 3-pointers. Dryburgh was also in double figures with 11. Adalynn Cherry, Loutsion and Bezjak each scored 10 points.
The Presidents return to action Wednesday against Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. The Tartans are coached by Kathy McConnell-Miller, who led the Trinity girls basketball team prior to taking the job at Carnegie Mellon. The tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
