The following questions were asked recently on the Wonderline :

Q: My co-workers and I were talking and we want to adopt a family with the Adopt A Family program . Who do we talk to about doing that?

Anyone interested in adopting a family should call the York News-Times business office at 402-204-7002 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Q: I appreciate the efforts put forth by the Chamber of Commerce and local businesses for Shop Small Saturday. Where did that idea originate?

Small Business Saturday first hit the internet in 2010. It began as a hashtag to promote shopping at small businesses on a given Saturday, which promoted following a business’ social media age. A year later, the United States Senate passed a resolution of support. Since then, it has been widely recognized and promoted on the local level.

The goal of Small Business Saturday, being held today, is to “support your small businesses,” said Madonna Mogul, executive director of the York Chamber of Commerce.

Today many shops will be handing out gift bags, which will include a gift card to one of approximately 20 participating small businesses. Some businesses will also have extended or different hours for the day.

Q. What committee or board or group of people select the Teacher of the Year in Nebraska schools? How are the candidates for this award selected? Thank you.

According to the Nebraska Department of Education, a panel of Nebraska educators selected the 2024 Nebraska Teacher of the Year . The department said the Teacher of the Year program recognizes the contributions of classroom teachers who are exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, skilled, and who have the ability to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn.

Scott Phillips, a seventh-grade math teacher at Aurora Middle School, was named Teacher of the Year in September. Phillips, who was one of three finalists for the state honor, will also participate in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

“I think all applicants, all people that are nominated, to get to that point, are deserving of this honor,” Phillips said after being named winner. “So, I am humbled and excited to be representing the state of Nebraska in the education realm as a teacher.”

Q. How often is the city street sweeper used?

York Public Works director James Paul said the street sweeper runs every day during the warmer months.

“We put it in storage, depending on weather, in the fall,” Paul said. “(Once) we put it in, we don’t get it back out until it gets warmer.”
