WPS Health Solutions plans to eliminate 313 positions in Madison and Monona, the company said in a letter filed with the state on Thursday .

The layoffs, which will affect 303 employees at the WPS campus on West Broadway, in Monona, and 10 employees at the WPS facility on Tradewinds Parkway in Madison, are expected to begin on Jan. 21.

WPS, an insurance company, is reducing its workforce "in response to competitive pressures and contract losses in the federal government contracts market," its notice to the Department of Workforce Development said.

The company cited the same reasons when it announced 128 layoffs in Monona and Rothschild in 2021. It had about 3,600 employees at the time, including 550 in Monona.

WPS supports nearly 9 million people in Tricare, the federal health insurance program for the miliary, according to its website. It has contracts for Medicare Part A and Part B and several states, and it provides Medicare supplemental insurance in Wisconsin.

It has been consolidating its facilities and renovating its main corporate office as many employees have been working remotely since the COVID-19 pandemic, a spokesperson told the Wisconsin State Journal this summer .

The spokesperson said WPS expected more of its Monona employees to work onsite once a building renovation there was complete.

A $30 million golf entertainment complex that has been proposed nearby would replace five buildings at the western end of the WPS campus in Monona and in a neighboring office park.
