Wynwood gears up across the board for Art Week
Wynwood is gearing up for Miami Art Week with art museum galleries, on-the street art and special events.
Starting Dec. 2 and co-existing with Art Basel, Wynwood's main street along Northwest Second Avenue is set to be filled with street, pop-up and graffiti art throughout its more than 50 square blocks.
Visitors and locals will have time and a place for serious collectors, art-world shakers, and the general culturally hungry public to sample the best of Wynwood and its thriving arts scene, said Florentino Diaz, Wynwood Business Improvement District (BID) interim executive director.
"Miami Art Week is like a 21st century cultural Woodstock for our Wynwood neighborhood," he said. "The BID is the engine that reps and guides not just the artistic side of Wynwood, but also its booming business and development wave, helping to stitch together all aspects of community life."
On tap will be art fairs, events, and programming from local leading art institutions and galleries. Wynwood-specific Art Week highlights for 2024 include:
Fairs Spectrum Miami and Red Dot Miami will return to MANA Wynwood Convention Center at 318 NW 23rd St., from Dec. 4 to 8, covering more than 150,000 square feet of indoor exhibition space.
Goldman Global Arts will be featuring work on the Wynwood Walls at 2520 NW Second Ave. for Miami Art Week, including the art of Carlos Mare, with special events all week. Wynwood Walls will present a pre-week special launch event Nov. 29 for Jessica Goldman Srebnick's new book "Street Art Icons: The Story of Wynwood Walls," published by Assouline. The book serves as a tribute to the art form, featuring photographs by Martha Cooper and excerpts by graffiti iconoclasts including Shepard Fairey, Maya Hayuk, Kenny Scharf and Ron English.
Art of Hip Hop at 299 NW 25th St. presents "Cey Adams, Departure: 40 Years of Art and Design," a career-defining retrospective exhibition celebrating the contributions of this visionary artist. The exhibition opens to the public Dec. 4.
Museum of Graffiti's fifth-anniversary exhibition opening Dec. 4 at 276 NW 26th St. features the pioneering work of OG Slick, an artist whose influence on graffiti, street culture, and contemporary art has reverberated for over three decades. The exhibition will include culinary F&B pairings courtesy of Cook Unity and Paso D'Oro, with musical performances curated by Rolling Loud.
The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse's new exhibition, focusing on the decades from 1930-1970, includes works by John Chamberlain, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Roy Lichtenstein, Cy Twombly, Louise Nevelson, Jackson Pollock and other contemporary masters. Opens Dec. 2.
The Gary Nader Art Centre at 62 NE 27th St. will be the home of "The Latin Grammy Academy Collection: 25 Years of Music and Art," a landmark exhibition that includes work from artists Romero Britto, Walter Goldfarb and Michael V. Rios, as well as memorabilia from Latin music icons such as Emilio Estefan, Laura Pausini, Gustavo Cerati and Joe Arroyo.
Ralph Pucci International at 550 NW 28th St. will mount "Primal Mysteries," an exhibition of Plasterglass sculpture, inspired by heroes from the worlds of sculpture and painting, and with an earthy, contemporary feel.
Wynwood Marketplace at 2250 Second Ave. is hosting "HIVE," a culinary & cocktail village, produced by Swarm, starting Dec. 5.
Other notable Wynwood galleries and arts centers include Aliona Ortega Fine Art, Art Fusion Galleries, Gerez Gallery, Harold Golen Gallery, Lelia Mordoch Gallery, Lina Cerrone Fine Art Gallery, Oliver Cole Gallery, Paradox Museum, Private Gallery, The Wall Art Gallery, Wolberg Studio and University of Miami Art Gallery.
What makes Wynwood an even more outstanding Miami Art Week destination is its deserved reputation as a foodie paradise, with popular restaurants such as Doya, Pastis, KYU, Maman and Coyo Taco, Mr. Diaz said. There are also boutique local shops including Base Superstore, Wanitta, Mejuri, Congo Clothing Company, and OFY. And for a little of Wynwood's famous nightlife experience, R House, Gramps and Cerveceria La Tropical are places to check out.
"We embrace our creative energy, and one of the most renowned examples of street art, which makes Wynwood so special both in Miami and the world over, while also looking towards the future as our former industrial landscape grows and evolves," he said.
