With the New York Mets ' backs against the wall in Game 5 of the NL Championship Series, how would they ensure the season didn't end at Citi Field on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers?

To everyone, the answer was simple: get more hits and walk fewer batters.

Early in Friday's game, they did one of those things well thanks to Pete Alonso's three-run home run in the first inning that gave the Mets a 3-0 lead. It just so happened that on Friday's "MLB on FOX" pregame show , New York Yankees legend called out the Mets first baseman, even if he didn't name him directly.

"The story of this series is the Mets' inability to score," Jeter said as FOX put up a graphic of the top three stars on each team. "The discrepancy right here is unbelievable. You're talking about five home runs, 16 RBIs for (Mookie) Betts, (Shoehei) Ohtani and (Max) Muncy and (Francisco) Lindor, Alonso and (Brandon) Nimmo have gone deep once with two RBIs. That has to change if the Mets expect to get back into this series. ...

"Someone's going to come up with a big hit, and you can't put it all on Lindor and (Mark) Vientos. I mean, someone else is going to have to step up. Like I said, I know our job up here is to dissect, but they have to score runs early. That's the only way they're going to have a chance here, otherwise this Dodgers offense is just going to take off."

Alonso, who entered the game with 2 hits in 15 at-bats in the series, delivered — loudly — with a 432-foot home run to center field that scored Lindor and Nimmo.

The Mets entered Game 5 with 31 walks issued — a four-game record — and 35 of their own runners stranded. Collectively, Lindor, Nimmo and Alonso had eight hits and 15 times on base compared to 33 times on base for Ohtani, Betts and Muncy.

Los Angeles responded with a run in the top of the second inning via a wild pitch that scored Kike Hernández, who got on via a walk.

New York trails the best-of-seven series 3-1.
