2-year-old dies after accidentally shooting himself in Walmart parking lot

DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB/Gray News) - A Georgia family is mourning a 2-year-old boy who died after accidentally shooting himself in a Walmart parking lot, WALB reports .

Nakyzi Odums' grandmother describes him as a boy who "smiled brightly, laughed wholeheartedly [and] loved unconditionally" on a GoFundMe set up for the family. The 2-year-old died after accidentally shooting himself Wednesday outside a Walmart in Douglas, Georgia.

Witnesses say the boy was in a car while his parents were shopping at a fireworks stand just feet away. Suddenly, they heard a pop.

Nakyzi's parents rushed back to their car and found their son had shot himself in the chest. It was previously reported he shot himself in the face.

Police said in a Facebook post that Nakyzi died Saturday afternoon at a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida, according to WALB .

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time," the post read.

The family plans to use any money they receive through GoFundMe to help pay for Nakyzi's burial. Donations will also allow his parents to "grieve properly," his grandmother wrote.

Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette earlier said investigators were trying to figure out how the toddler got a hold of the gun he shot himself with. Witnesses said he was sitting in the front seat of the car, and the gun may have been in the side of the car door.

"You're allowed to have a gun in the car, but when there's a child involved, you need to make sure that the gun is secure so that the child doesn't have access to it," Pruette said.

As the investigation continues, it's unclear if the boy's parents will face charges in the incident.
