10-year-old girl struck, killed by school bus in neighborhood, police say

O'FALLON, Mo. ( KMOV /Gray News) – A 10-year-old girl in Missouri was struck and killed by a school bus Thursday afternoon.

Authorities said the girl was hit by the bus when it was turning at an intersection in a neighborhood in O'Fallon, which is about 35 miles northwest of St. Louis.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The school bus driver is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

"Our hearts go out to the family and all those affected by the tragedy," said O'Fallon Police Sgt. Bryan Harr. "We ask for the community's respect of the family's privacy while we work hard to gather all the details."

The victim was a student in the Fort Zumwalt School District, which later released the following statement:
