In an effort to increase safety and trust, Uber announced it will now allow riders to get verified .

On Tuesday, the ride-booking company unveiled its rider verification process to help confirm that its users are who they claim to be, with the goal of making Uber a safe and trusted place to ride and drive.

"This new verified rider badge builds off of our current verification processes, helps deter fraudulent behavior, and adds another layer of trust, safety, and peace of mind for drivers and all Uber platform users," the company wrote on its website promoting the new process.

Uber said it designed the measures following driver feedback. believes the verification process will help promote safer and more comfortable interactions and help make the platform safer.

What is uber verification?

Verification involves cross-checking the account information the rider gave at sign-up, like the rider's name or phone number, against trusted third-party data.

If Uber can't validate that information, they can choose to upload their government-issued ID, such as a driver's license, a passport, a national identity card, or other documentation. They said they may also ask for a selfie.

Uber noted that the process is not a guarantee of someone's identity or good behavior, but said it can help the company build trust and accountability on its platform.

Verification is now available in the United States.

Earlier this year, Uber began testing the program in a handful of cities across the US. In those pilot markets, the majority of riders were verified, and they tended to give drivers 5 stars more often. Riders who were verified also had fewer serious complaints from drivers.

Last year, the company announced another feature that allows drivers to use the front-facing camera on their smartphone to record video and audio during trips, without the need to invest in a dashcam. Uber said their pilot was a success, and they heard that more drivers wanted access. Now, drivers in all 50 states have access to this tool, as well.

There are currently more than 7 million monthly drivers and couriers on the Uber platform around the world.
