7 arrested as protesters mob NYC subway station: NYPD

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Crowds of protesters mobbed a subway station in Manhattan Wednesday night in response to a police-involved shooting at a Brooklyn subway station on Sunday.

Demonstrators jumped the turnstiles at the West 4th Street station and chanted obscenities at responding NYPD officers, video shows.

The chaos broke out onto the streets, as officers were seen detaining individuals involved.

Police say 17 individuals were taken into custody amid the discord, 10 of whom were issued summons and released for disorderly conduct.

The remaining individuals were arrested for charges including resisting arrest, obstruction, and assault, according to the NYPD.

Protesters also gathered on Tuesday to call for free public transportation arguing there wouldn't be a need for enforcement activity underground if there were no cost to ride the subway. The NYPD's presence in the subway system increased following a st r ing of crimes earlier this year.

Interim Police Commissioner Thomas Donlon and top brass from the NYPD addressed the Brooklyn subway shooting on Wednesday.

"I want to state that some of the narratives discussed by people, that we shot someone over $2.90 – which is wrong and frankly irresponsible," NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

Officials noted the police body camera footage from the incident will be released in the coming days.
