Several homes on the border of New Jersey and New York were asked to evacuate on Saturday night after a fire that began last week was amplified due to strong winds and breached containment lines.

The Jennings Creek fire began last week in New Jersey and on Saturday crossed containment lines, due to weather conditions, New York State Park Police said.

Over 100 homes along the NJ-NY border were asked to evacuate on Saturday.

"The voluntary evacuation remains in effect at least through this evening to allow for uninterrupted firefighting efforts," NY State Park Police said Monday.

The Jennings Creek wildfire is primarily in the Sterling Forest State Park and is boxed in by fire lines. To date, the fire has burned 5,304 acres.

As of Monday morning, it remains 88 percent contained. Due to weather conditions and firefighter activity, smoke will be noticeable in the area throughout the day.
