AARP seeks Marquette County volunteer tax preparers

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The AARP Tax-Aide Program hosted an introductory meeting on Thursday to find more volunteer tax preparers in Marquette County.

The group met to discuss the importance of free tax preparations for people aged 50 and older.

Ann Fisher, AARP Tax Program Marquette coordinator, said many people don't realize they can get refunds, and they're leaving money on the table that tax preparers could help them find.

Fisher says it's a rigorous training program requiring volunteers to pass the IRS exam. Fisher says the training is the hardest part, and the rest is very fulfilling.

"It's just a wonderful time. You sit down with someone for 45 minutes. You hear a little of their story. You get their taxes prepared professionally, and well and you send them on their way, usually with a refund," Fisher said.

Fisher says although the group talked to people in Marquette County, there are offices in Delta and Dickinson counties that also need volunteer tax preparers.
