ACS board incumbents lose two of three seats
Nov. 5—ANDERSON — The makeup of the Anderson Community Schools Board of Trustees will change in the coming year after incumbents lost two of the three seats up for election Tuesday.
In the Central District, Rodney Chamberlain captured the Position 1 seat, drawing 50% of the vote in a three-way race with incumbent Peter Lyon and Ted Bitner.
Chamberlain said he is grateful to be able to represent the community and the school system. He said he recognizes that people in the community have put their trust in him.
During his campaign, he stressed providing resources to students and teachers to have what they need to succeed.
"I am going to be an open book," Chamberlain said. "There are not going to be any secrets when it comes down to making sure our students have what they need to get an education and making sure our teachers have the tools to get them that education."
In the East District, incumbent Holly Renz won the Position 2 seat by fewer than 700 votes over Lindsay Brown.
Renz said she is grateful to have another chance to give back to the school district and the community.
"I hoped that coming from a board member perspective, we could maintain stability, decorum and some board governance that is appropriate," Renz said. "I believe I am fair-minded, I have common sense and that good decisions will prevail as we move forward."
In the South District, Martha Green stunned incumbent Kenneth Hodson by capturing more than 65% of the vote to thwart his bid for a second term.
Green said she was shocked at the final results and is happy to join the school board. She said her themes of honesty and transparency helped her in the race.
"I know this city," Green said. "I have seen it at its best; I have seen it at its worst. We are on an upswing, and our schools reflect that.
"I want to be a part of that. The better the kids do, and the schools and the teachers do, the better our community does."
