Alabama High School Football Rankings: Top 25 teams — Sept. 22

Week 5 of the Alabama high school football season is complete, and the state top-25 rankings have seen some significant shifts.

While the top seven teams remain the same as last week, the majority of the shakeup is lower in the rankings with a few programs being upset and others coming off big wins.

Below are the top 25 teams in Alabama, according to the On3 Massey Ratings.

On3 Massey Ratings , officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule and margin of victory. According to the model — four teams from Alabama rank inside the nationwide top 100.

Previous: No. 1 The defending state champions continue to roll. After wins over Pinson, St. Louis (Mo.) Lutheran North, Smiths Station and Dothan, they handled a top-10 Enterprise tam 34-21 to move to 5-0. Their biggest test of the season comes this week when national powerhouse IMG Academy (Fla.) comes to Alabama for what should be an epic showdown.

Previous: No. 2 The Tigers now sit at 5-0 after a 47-0 blowout over Jefferson Davis, adding another strong offensive performance to their resume after rolling over North Miami Beach (Fla.), Birmingham Vestavia Hills, Opelika and Enterprise.

Previous: No. 3 After losing their season opener against Loganville (Ga.) Grayson, the 2023 7A state runners-up have reeled off four consecutive wins. First on the road against Nashville (Tenn.) Lipscomb Academy, then blitzing Tuscaloosa 47-7 , rolling past Oak Mountain 42-7 and beating top-25 Vestavia Hills 38-17 over the weekend.

Clay-Chalkville

Previous: No. 4 The reigning 6A state champions began the defense of their title with a commanding 28-7 victory over Heuytown in Week 1. They followed that with a 62-7 romp over Birmingham Ramsey in Week 2 and a 45-0 obliteration of Pell City. The Cougars continued their dominant ways against Shades Valley (42-0) before hitting the bye week. Now they'll face No. 3 Thompson to close the month.

Previous: No. 5 The Spartans remained spotless after a convincing 34-12 win on the road against McGill-Toolen Catholic . Saraland has already faced one of the tougher schedules in the state, and it will only get more challenging with a home tilt against No. 11 Montgomery Catholic Prep on Friday night.

Previous: No. 6 The Bucs have been on an early-season rollercoaster, beating Western to open the season, followed by a 39-37 loss to Spain Park the next week. They came back with a vengeance to beat a then-top-10 Hillcrest team 35-6. They won a defensive battle 8-7 over No. 4 Hewitt-Trussville before routing previously undefeated Prattville 40-6 over the weekend. A top-15 matchup with Parker looms on Friday night.

Hewitt-Trussville

Previous: No. 7 Coming off a tough loss 8-7 loss to Hoover last weekend, the Huskies needed to get back on track. And they did exactly that with a commanding 37-16 win over Hillcrest to move to 4-1.

Spain Park

Previous: No. 10 (+2) Another significant riser early in the season has been Spain Park, which opened the season with a 38-7 throttling of Sparkman before beating Hoover in a 39-37 thriller two weeks ago. They eked out a 28-26 squeaker against Helena last week, then rolled past Benjamin Russell 42-15 to move to 4-0 and up two spots.

Previous: No. 8 (-1) Enterprise made easy work Andalusia in Week 1 with a 35-7 win and handled Pike Road 24-6, then dropped No. 11 Dothan 28-21. But they were dominated by No. 2 Auburn last weekend, and the schedule only got harder against No. 1 Central on Friday night. They put up a strong fight but ultimately fell 34-21.

Previous: No. 14 (+4) The Yellow Jackets moved to 5-0 and into the top 10 with a one-point win over Mountain Brook, a top-15 team coming into the game. They'll look to keep things going on the road Friday night against Helena.
