‘Apparent homeless encampment’ catches fire behind Somerset gas station

SOMERSET, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Firefighters were called to investigate numerous reports of smoke after tents and clothes caught fire behind a Somerset gas station on Thursday.

According to the Somerset Fire Department (SFD), crews saw "a large amount of smoke coming from the wooded area behind Speedway North," and while on the way to investigate, received multiple 911 calls about the smoke.

When crews arrived at the scene, the SFD said a large amount of clothes and other items were found on fire.

"The area had a tent, several shopping carts and trash scattered around," The SFD wrote on Facebook.

Authorities said the area that caught on fire was "an apparent homeless encampment."
