The Aurelius location of CountryMax tied for second in a recent competition between stores in the regional home, lawn and pet supply retail chain.

That location and the one in Seneca Falls each collected 290 donations of pet treats, toys and food for local shelters, CountryMax said in a news release. The Aurelius location collected for the Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY in Auburn, which mans a permanent pet adoption space at the store three days a week. It is the first space of its kind at CountryMax, which is based in Farmington and has 19 locations.

"We couldn't believe how generous customers were in supporting these shelters," said CountryMax events coordinator Kelly McMorrow.

"Even in challenging economic times, people want to help pets in need."

The Webster location came in first in the competition with 305 donations.

The competition also included the most patriotic "Made in the USA" display, the best meet-the-team video and the best googly eyes placement.

Cayuga County and CountryMax officials gathered Tuesday to cut the ribbon on the retailer's new store at 1651 Clark St. Road in Aurelius.
