NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - After a nationwide search that drew nearly 500 applicants, the Audubon Nature Institute Board of Directors has named Michael J. Sawaya as its new President and Chief Executive Officer.

Sawaya, who previously served as President and CEO of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, will officially begin his new role on January 1, 2025, following the retirement of Ron Forman , who led the nonprofit for over 50 years.

At the Convention Center, Sawaya oversaw initiatives like the multi-million-dollar River District project, aimed at transforming 48 acres of Center-owned land into a mixed-use development.

Before arriving in New Orleans six years ago, Sawaya served as Executive Director of San Antonio's Convention and Sports Facilities Department, leading expansions to the city's Convention Center and overseeing venues along the famed San Antonio Riverwalk.

"I am thrilled for this new opportunity to lead one of the nation's most respected organizations. From conservation work to our popular attractions, Audubon has a place in the hearts of so many around the country and I am honored to follow in the footsteps of the man who made this amazing organization a reality," said Sawaya.

Audubon Board Vice President Leslie Gottesegen called the selection of Sawaya "extremely deliberate and thorough," citing hundreds of hours spent reviewing applications and interviewing candidates.

Under Ron Forman's leadership, the Audubon Nature Institute expanded from a single zoo to a robust family of nature-themed parks, including the Audubon Aquarium, Insectarium, and the recently announced Riverfront for All project. Forman will continue to support Audubon in his new role as President Emeritus.

"Michael is recognized as a leader within our community," said Dr. Willard Dumas, Audubon Board Chairman. "Just as we celebrate Ron Forman's success over the past 53 years, we believe Michael is the leader we need to shepherd Audubon to the future."
