Bailey Zappe takes QB reps during media portion of practice

FOXBOROUGH (WJAR) - Wednesday's practice could indicate a change is coming in the Patriots quarterback room.

During the portion open to media, Bailey Zappe took the majority of quarterback reps while Mac Jones watched from the side.

Jones did not throw a single pass during the open window.

Malik Cunningham was second to Zappe, while Will Grier (who recently re-signed to the practice squad) also watched on the side.

Bill Belichick followed the same tune as he did last week when asked what the plan is.

"I’m not going to make any announcements on our lineup at any position," Belichick said. "So, it doesn’t matter what the position is. We’ll see how practice goes, see if everybody is ready to go. Hopefully everybody is ready to go, see what the injury situation is, and we’ll go with who we think is best on Sunday."

Jones has now been benched four times this season, the most recent coming in Sunday's loss to the Giants.

He was pulled at halftime after throwing two interceptions.

Zappe has been his backup in those four games, but hasn't yielded better results.

He's 19-of-39 for 158 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Belichick was asked what Zappe has to do to earn the starting job.

"Every player, whatever opportunities they have, need to do the best with them that they can –practice, games, even in meetings and other preparation opportunities," said Belichick. "So, that’s what a player can do – be prepared, do the best he can, and that’s what each guy will have an opportunity to do somewhere along the line over the course of a long season."
