Bay City area NMFL roundup Week 4: Oscoda pitches favor-returning shutout

M.Hernandez22 min ago

Oscoda didn't like the memory of last year's shutout.

But the Owls did like the sounds of it.

Delivering a complete reversal of fortune from a year ago, Oscoda traveled to Elk Rapids and blanked the Elks 20-0 in Northern Michigan Football League Leaders Division play. The big win came just 12 months after the Owls were shut out by Elk Rapids 30-0.

"The player of the game was the Oscoda defense," coach Mark Whitley said.

The unblemished defensive performance was Oscoda's first since it posted six shutouts during the 2020 season. After dropping its first two games of the year, Oscoda (2-2, 1-1) has now won two in a row.

Tawas continues to make strides, but the Braves came up short of putting one win on top of another.

One week after snapping its 10-game losing streak, Tawas was within sight of a second victory in a row until Benzie Central pulled out the 20-14 win in NMFL Leaders action. Benzie scored the final moments of the game to break a 14-14 standoff.

"I'm very proud of the kids for fighting for four quarters," first-year Tawas coach Will Luzar said. "But we've got to find a way to finish, play after play. We've got to find a way to get to that W."

Tawas (1-3, 0-1) got a pair of touchdown tosses from Walker Hazen, who hit Devin Grathoff for a 15-yard score and Trace Reay for a 26-yard TD.
