Nov. 6—A project to put sand back onto the beach at Andy Bowie County Park on South Padre Island has just gotten underway and is expected to be complete in about two weeks, weather permitting.

The project, which aims to repair beach erosion from recent storms, is a partnership between the city of South Padre Island, the Texas General Land Office and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Cameron County will receive an estimated 78,500 cubic yards of beach quality sand to be spread at Andy Bowie Park between County Beach Access No. 3 and the Hilton Garden Inn, "adding to the restoration, renourishment and beatification of our pristine beach and its access areas," the county announced.

A "renourishment" project to replace approximately 235,500 cubic yards of sand inside South Padre Island city limits is nearing completion, according to the announcement.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. expressed gratitude to the federal and state agencies involved and to the city of South Padre Island.

"This partnership will provide long-term benefits to our coastal beaches, protect our dune systems and support local wildlife and endangered species," he said. "Additionally, it will enhance habitat and park infrastructure. This project aims to restore erosion caused by recent storms and help mitigate future impacts."

Precinct 1 County Commissioner Sofia Benavides also thanked the various entities involved in the project.

"This initiative will create a wider and healthier beach for our residents and visitors to enjoy while also protecting the beach at Andy Bowie Park from coastal erosion," she said.

County Parks and Recreation Director Joe Vega described beach renourishment projects as "crucial for our area."

"This effort will help maintain the resilience of our beaches and infrastructure after storms and severe weather," he said. "It will ensure that our beautiful beaches remain safe and enjoyable," he said.

Andy Bowie Park beach will remain open during the project, though the county asked visitors to "abide by all park safety signage."

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company is performing the dredging work for the renourishment project.
