Bill Belichick gives revealing statement on Justin Fields’ season

K.Thompson27 min ago
Justin Fields has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 2-0 start against the Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos. While he has flashes of his play from Chicago, he is taking care of the football much better, yet the team still has just one touchdown on the season.

He has 273 passing yards and a touchdown but is completing over 70 percent of his passes with zero turnover-worthy plays. That is a winning formula as long as he can find more productivity. If he can not, though, Russell Wilson, who is still sidelined with a calf injury, seems destined to receive the job right back.

  • BETTING:
  • Fields could get the job outright if he takes another step in his game. Bill Belichick has liked what he has seen from Fields so far. He compared the situation to that of Drew Bledsoe and others in his experience.

"Those injuries provide opportunities," Belichick said. "Whether that's Tom Brady coming in for Drew Bledsoe, Matt Cassell coming in for Brady, or Kurt Warner coming in for Trent Green. I mean, those guys became good quarterbacks in part because of the opportunity of those unfortunate injuries. Some guys are ready to go, and it looks like Justin Fields has taken advantage of his opportunity in Pittsburgh."

Belichick never talks in superlatives or hot takes, so that is about as revealing a statement that he will give someone. Fields has done a nice job with the Steelers, though they have not asked Fields to open up the offense just yet.

Fields has a touchdown and over 100 yards called back over the first two weeks from penalties, which must be cleaned up for the offense's productivity to take another step. The only question is if the Steelers and Fields can continue not turning the ball over, especially against the Los Angeles Chargers' elite pass rush.
