A late night shooting in Birmingham's Five Points South neighborhood left four dead and 18 injured is one of three quadruple homicides in the city thus far in 2023.

On July 13, a drive-by shooting at an adult birthday party left four people dead and nine others injured. The victims were Angela Weatherspoon, 56, of Center Point, Markeisha Gettings, 42, of Birmingham, Stevie McGhee, 39, of Birmingham, and Lerandus Anderson, 24, of Center Point.

On Feb. 16, four men were killed in a drive-by shooting in the Smithfield neighborhood. Talton "TJ" Tait, 36, Cortez Ray, 32, Terrell Edwards, 38, and Kevin McGhee, 38, were killed in that shooting.

It also the most recent mass homicide in the state.

The FBI defines mass killings as incidents in which four or more people die within a 24-hour period, not including the killer, according to The Associated Press.

Here are other Alabama mass shootings that killed four or more in the last 10 years:

April 15, 2023When a music speaker fell with a bang at a Sweet 16 party in Dadeville, gunfire erupted killing four and wounding more than 30. The shooting began after an announcement telling those with guns to leave. Those killed on the dance hall floor were Phil Dowdell, 18, Shaunkivia Nicole "Keke" Smith, 17, Marsiah Emmanuel "Siah" Collins, 19, and Corbin Dahmontrey Holston, 23. Three of the five shooting suspects were teens.

June 4, 2020: A dispute between members of a Morgan County motorcycle club, the "7 Deadly Sins," ended with seven people shot to death at a Valhermoso Springs home. Tammy England Muzzey, 45 of Valhermoso Springs; Emily Brooke Payne, 21 of Valhermoso Springs; Roger Lee Jones Jr., 19 of Decatur; Jeremy Wade Roberts, 31 of Athens; William Zane Hodgin, 18 of Somerville; James Wayne Benford, 22 of Decatur; Dakota Green, 17 of Valhermoso Springs, were killed. The suspects, Frederic Allen Rogers and John Michael Legg were charged with capital murder.

Sept. 2, 2019 : In the tiny Limestone County town of Elkmont, parents Mary Sisk, 35, father John Sisk, 38, and three of their children - Kane, 6, Rorrie, 4, and Colson, 6 months - were shot and killed. Their adopted son, Mason Sisk, who was 14 at the time of the crime, was sentenced to life in prison.

Aug. 20, 2016: In an isolated home on a dirt road west of Citronelle in Mobile County, Robert Lee Brown, 26; Chelsea Marie Reed, 22; Justin Kaleb Reed, 23; Joseph Adam Turner, 26; Shannon Melissa Randall, 35, were killed with an axe and at least one firearm as they slept. Derrick Dearman was charged with six counts of capital murder, one of those because Chelsea Reed was five months pregnant, and was sentenced to death.

Alabama's deadliest mass shooting was 15 years ago

Going back 30 years, there are only a few other occasions of four or more people being shot to death at one time in the Birmingham area.

On Jan. 29, 2012, five people were shot to death in Birmingham's Ensley Highlands neighborhood - Charles "C.J." Render, 21; Ronnie Render, 42; Jonathan Sanchez, 23; Jeffery Davis Jr. 23; and Demetrius Sanders, 19. At least four of the five were shot execution-style in the head, and were found in one bedroom stripped of their clothes. Three teenagers were charged and all pleaded guilty or were convicted.

Five people were found dead inside the Changing Times Lounge in north Birmingham's Druid Hills neighborhood on Oct. 16, 1994. All five were found face-down, shot execution-style in the back of the head. Two men convicted in the slayings died while on Death Row.

And although they were not committed with a firearm, two other mass murders - defined as four or more victims killed in one place at one time - occurred in the Birmingham area in the past 15 years.

On Aug. 20, 2008, five men were found inside a north Shelby County apartment complex , bound and their throats cut. They had been shocked and beat. The slayings were murders for hire tied to missing drug money. Those killed were: Angel Horacio Vega-Gonzalez, 23; his brother, Gustavo Vega-Gonzalez, 24, also known as Armando Lopez; Ezequiel Rebollar-Terevan, 23; Jaime Echeverra, 30; and Armando Ibarra Mendoza, 31. Six men pleaded guilty to murder.

In Hueytown on March 7, 2009, Nika Sandlin, Jeri Lynn Cole, Josh Gilleo and Chad Gilbert were brutally stabbed to death. Scott Lamar Abbott was sentenced to life in prison.

The deadliest mass shooting in Alabama history was 15 years ago.
