Breaking down tight races in the Ky. House of Representatives

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The results of the 2024 election continue to roll in past the official election night, with a few close races taking place in central Kentucky house races.

House districts 45 and 88 came down to just a handful of votes, and both cover parts of Fayette County.

"I want everyone in the district to know that I want to be a voice for them, that I want to reach out and build those relationships," said Vanessa Grossl, representative-elect for House District 88.

Grossl was able to flip the seat for the Republican party, defeating incumbent Cherlynn Stevenson, who currently sits as the House Minority Caucus Chair.

Stevenson posted on X, acknowledging the loss, writing in part, "Thank you so much to the voters, volunteers, and donors who have supported me over the last 7 years. I wish Ms. Grossl well as she begins her service."

Sec. of State Michael Adams says it is a race that, as of Wednesday, does fall within the state's automatic recanvas process.

"Recanvas just means that we go back and check everything again. We don't rerun all of our ballots through the counters. That's a recount," he said. "We'll do that if we need to. A recanvass is just checking the totals that all the ballot scanners provided to us to make sure that was right."

Sen. Pres. Robert Stivers, head of Kentucky Republican leadership, spoke about how he views the tight race.

"That's a policy issue, and I think the governor and the democrat party took a big loss," said Sen. Stivers. They have none of their house leadership left."

Kentucky legislature will continue to have an overwhelming majority in both the House and the Senate chambers for the upcoming term.
