BREAKING: Hazmat situation at Petro truck stop in Beaumont

T.Johnson38 min ago

First responders have finished up their work containing a hazmat fire that burned at up to 800 degrees after the sun ignited pelletized sulfur on the ground Thursday afternoon at the Petro truck stop off Walden near I-10.

District Chief Scott Wheat tell KFDM/Fox 4 News the call came in at about noon, reporting a fire in the back of the parking lot behind the truck stop.

Investigators found a chemical product on the ground they believed to be pelletized sulfur.

The sun caused it to ignite, reaching temperatures of up to 800 degrees.

Fire damaged a portion of the trailer part of a nearby 18 wheeler.

No one was hurt and firefighters were able to put out the flames.

Investigators are working to find out how the pellets ended up on the ground.

"It was pretty hot, but it was very small," said District Chief Wheat. "About five feet circumference area, two different sites, roughly 50 to 100 pounds."

No one was evacuated from the truck stop because the fire was away from the main building.
