$1.5 billion terminal modernization program is underway

On Sunday, 4 The Record host Ryan Recker sat down with Christina Cassotis, the CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, to talk about the 25th anniversary of the authority and the ongoing $1.5 billion terminal modernization program at Pittsburgh International Airport.Cassotis said there was a successful focus on making sure Pittsburgh firms were involved so that Pittsburghers could take part in building the upgraded terminal."We wanted this built by Pittsburgh for Pittsburgh," said Cassotis. "We didn't want one airline to represent what this community deserved in terms of an airport."on Sapp, an instructor for the Pit2Work program, said of the program's graduates: "It's very exciting. And they know that their lives are about to change."Sapp, who is part of an organization called Introduction to Construction, added, "With all the construction that's going on at the Greater Pittsburgh airport here, we thought it was a good thing to actually coordinate our group with Pit2Work."assotis anticipates the upgraded terminal will open in the third quarter of 2025.She said of the need for a new terminal: "It's table stakes. If your airport doesn't work well, your economy is not going to do all it can do. And this airport is brilliant. It was built 30-something years ago for a very specific airline and serving a very specific need for a hub that's over. And we want to make sure that the airport is delivering everything it can for this community. So I'd say this is this is not a luxury. This is a need."
