Bygones: Wrestler Bronko Nagurski squared off in Duluth 70 years ago

Two Iron Range men used the carcasses of two deer as floats to shore when their boat capsized during a squall while they were crossing Swan Lake with their quarry and gear. The men were in the water for about an hour.

Masked El Diablo and Mel Bremmer will open tomorrow night's wrestling card at Duluth's Shrine Auditorium. In the big event of the evening, Bronko Nagurski will face Wild Bill MacMurray, the man who sucker-punched Nagurski after the final bell in last week's bout.

Elliott Packing Co. in Duluth will reopen before Christmas, putting 40-60 people back to work, according to the head of a group of investors trying to buy the meat plant. Reopening is still based upon the approval of a complicated financial deal involving bank credit, loans from the city and private investments.

For the second time in 10 months, University of Wisconsin-Superior students will soon vote on whether to raise their fees to create a modern student center. In February, students voted 421-260 not to raise their fees by up to $546 a year for 20 years to build a $19.5 million center.
