Cape Cod Doctors Share Expertise During Breast Cancer Awareness Month During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, doctors with Cape Cod Healthcare are sharing their expertise about the best ways to catch it early.HYANNIS, MA — In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cape Cod Healthcare (CCHC) is emphasizing the importance of early breast cancer detection and proactive breast health management. With 1 in 8 women in the United States expected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime, CCHC is committed to providing comprehensive breast care services, from screening to treatment, for the Cape Cod community.
"An annual screening mammogram starting at age 40 for women of average risk is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages," says Dr. Jill Oxley, MD, medical director of Breast Care Services at Cape Cod Hospital. "But for women under 40, it's important to be aware they can still develop breast cancer, even though routine screenings are not yet recommended for this age group."
The latest digital technology of 3D mammography is available along with a skilled team of breast imaging experts at Cuda Women's Health Center in Hyannis, Seifer Women's Health and Imaging Center in Falmouth and Fontaine Outpatient Center in Harwich.
Dr. Oxley also stresses the importance of early risk assessment, particularly for younger women. "The National Comprehensive Cancer Network and other major breast cancer organizations recommend every woman receive a formal breast cancer risk assessment by age 25, and no later than age 30. This helps identify high-risk women who may benefit from enhanced screening and monitoring through a personalized care plan."

CCHC's High-Risk Hereditary Cancer Program provides tailored care for patients at an elevated risk for breast cancer, offering genetic counseling, risk monitoring and personalized risk reduction strategies.
If a breast cancer diagnosis is confirmed, CCHC offers a multidisciplinary approach, with a team of breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, reconstructive surgeons, breast patient navigators, as well as nutrition, genetic counseling and other support services to guide patients through every step of their care.
Dr. Jill Oxley, MD, is a breast surgeon, and is the Director of Breast Care Services at Cape Cod Healthcare. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Dr. Oxley attended Yale University School of Medicine and completed her residency at Boston Medical Center.
