Carter Smith’s College Football Destination Limited to Two FBS Sides After Michigan Decommitment

Sherrone Moore is losing grip on his recruits. Despite the coach remaining highly optimistic about how the Wolverines' positive culture and the trend of fostering talents will eventually help them catch the eyeballs of the big talents, the reality doesn't match his vision. Amidst the Bryce Underwood dilemma, the program faced another hard cheese under its belt. Carter Smith, a class of 2025 4-star quarterback, recently gave Moore a hutch, withdrawing his commitment from the program. While we don't yet know the exact reason for his mind change, father Dan Smith provided some food for thought, saying that, as per the evolved circumstances, the best option for his son was to reopen recruitment. But the obvious question it begs: what's the next? ON3's Wiltfong Whiparound takes time to dig out.

If the recruiting scene were a title chase, Carter Smith would surely have a trophy to flex this week. With the season almost wrapping up, the usual drift to swapping talents is taking a peak, and guess what, Carter Smith, the newly uncommitted QB, is in the driving seat for a lot of big programs. But to narrow it down, the ON3 's analyst keeps his eye on just two balls. 'Well, he's slated to take an official visit to Wisconsin next weekend. You like the way it's kind of setting up for Phil Longo, Luke Fickell, and the Badgers,' said Wiltfong, referring to how Wisconsin has been pushing hard for the most bona fide QBs in South Florida history.

Wisconsin schools were ranked the first among all the schools that stroke the rod early for Smith immediately after his Michigan walkout Wednesday. The Badgers will host a visit to Camp Randall just a few days after his de-commitment and will certainly look to make it their best shot to impress the highly touted star. Smith, himself, noticed the effort and said they were heavily hustling to take him in. But the grass could be greener at Florida's side as well.

"If Florida State needs to go back into the quarterback market, they'll be a team to watch, yeah, and that could make sense because Carter Smith is from Naples, Florida. Of course, he was committed to Michigan, so why would he be afraid of committing to Wisconsin? But if he wants to stay in the state, Florida State could be an option for him.." the ON3 analyst said, a potential Plan B for the 19-year-old rising star.

However, Smith has been having a full plate. He has heard from a total of 15 schools within just a week of his trademark career move. On the one hand, it certainly gives the young prodigy an ego boost; it demands a lot of time and precision in decision-making.

Carter Smith will not rush into a decision Carter Smith has always been a guy to watch out for, standing on the offensive side of the ball. While Moore and the other Michigan higher-ups considered him too new to be trusted with some big game responsibility, his impressive high school stats could easily make an opposing argument. Having a record of 10,917 yards of total offense and 139 touchdowns under the belt as a four-year letterman is not a joke. So, it is safe to say that every bit of attention Smith is enjoying right now is all but a fluke. However, he is taking it slowly.

With a handful of other programs like Oregon, UCF, and Louisville being all over him, the former Michigan commit said there are mutual interests. While marking Wisconsin separately for walking extra miles, Smith noted he is considering all the programs at the moment. But, he will not rush things up to make the right decision in the end.

Handling all the whizzes would be impossible if he did not have his family around to help him put things together from time to time. However, the one salient thing Smith is looking for in his recruitment process is culture. The QB phenom said he would be all in for a family-like atmosphere in the locker room. It will be interesting to see how many more visits come down his road after Wisconsin vs Oregon and where he settles in finally.
