Harrell revealed in July 2023 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, less than one year before filming his death announcement video the following December.
"We did catch [the cancer] early but not as early as I had thought," he said. "And it has spread faster than I thought it would. You may have seen me recently using this crutch when I told you I broke my hip. Well, it wasn't because I was injured in any kind of accident, it was because the cancer spread to my bones, the bones crumbled [and] my hip fractured."
Harrell also acknowledged in the footage that his "time was drawing short."

The Australian TV presenter died in October 2024 at the age of 67 after a battle with motor neuron disease.
"Farewell, my friends. My sister Kylie is posting this because I have left the building," a pre-written caption on MacDonald's Instagram read. "Hopefully I'm looking down from a cloud. Last night brought an end to a very tough few months."
The note continued, "While I've never wanted to die, the thought of leaving my tortured body was a relief. The last few months have been tough. Unable to swallow normal food, the tube feeding that should have sustained me didn't work because my gut couldn't tolerate any of the multiple brands of protein drinks. It went straight in and straight out. ... I have been slowly starving, growing weaker and weaker. I've also developed terrible back pain because my muscles aren't supporting my frame."
