  • Chicago Bears Notes from a week 3 loss This was as winnable a game as they come. The Chicago Bears won the time-of-possession battle by roughly 10 minutes over the Indianapolis Colts and had 5 fewer penalties for roughly 50 fewer yards. Yet, the Bears head back to Solider Field with their second loss in as many weeks. Here are my notes from the loss.

Caleb Williams completed 33/52(!) passes for a franchise rookie record 363 yards and 2 TDs. The way he spread the ball around at all levels of the field was impressive. But his 3 turnovers were too much to overcome. That said, throwing it over 50 times against 28 rushes against the league's worst run defense is problematic, to say the least. It is somewhat inevitable for a rookie to have at least a few throws he'd rather have back with that many dropbacks. For what seems like the first time in a very long time, it seems like the passing game is not an issue. The run game, however, is another story. When your best-looking back carries it 8 times for 30 yards (a 3.8-yard average), that is NOT a good thing. Credit to Roschon Johnson for the effort, physicality, and juice he provided the whole offense (he added 4 catches for 32 yards), but the run game is broken, and no fix is in sight. D'Andre Swift is not it. I was wrong on that one before the season. Shane Waldron also does not appear to be the fix we had hoped for. With the run game struggling to do anything, calling 4 straight run plays within the 5 yard line in attempt to score was Matt Nagy-esque. Good thing we have Rome Odunze. His deep ball tracking is reminiscent of prime Alshon Jeffery. As he and Caleb continue to settle in with one another, we should see plenty more games like this one. DeAndre Carter is a solid role player, and I am very happy we have him. That said, I cannot wait to get Keenan Allen back. His ability to get open in zone coverage will help improve our 3rd down conversions. We were 9 of 21 against the Colts. The offensive line is also continuing to struggle in pass pro and run blocking and Teven Jenkins is continuing to lower his price tag with each game. Coleman Shelton is good at snapping the football. Matt Pryor had a decent game until a critical lapse in pass pro that led to a sack with 3 minutes remaining. I would much rather have Braxton Jones or Darnell Wright block defensive ends than Cole Kmet. Jonathan Taylor is a stud. Even when the Bears D had guys in position, he made plays that few backs in the league can make. While TJ Edwards seemed a step behind the action today, which was notable because typically he's ahead of it, Tremaine Edmunds put together his second consecutive strong performance. Gervon Dexter continues to impress in his sophomore campaign. Montez Sweat made his presence felt all game long. What about you all? What were some of your top takeaways?
