BAY CITY, MI – The city will have a new mayor when the calendar flips to 2025.

Christopher Girard, of Bay City's 6th Ward, defeated 3rd Ward Commissioner Andrea Burney in the general election. He tallied 8,485 votes to Burney's 4,092 votes, according to unofficial vote totals provided by the Bay County Clerk's Office.

In Bay City, the mayor is chief executive officer and presides at commission meetings. They may vote in case of a tie and have veto authority.

Girard will replace former 1st Ward Commissioner Jesse Dockett as mayor. Dockett served as interim mayor beginning in October after Kathleen Newsham resigned from the position.

The mayoral seat in Bay City is nonpartisan and is a four-year term.

Newsham announced her resignation Sept. 16 in a letter that was read aloud at a city commission meeting.

She worked for the city in some capacity for more than 30 years, was elected mayor in 1997, named a city commissioner in 2003 and once again became mayor in 2015.
