Columbus man sentenced to prison for assaulting officers during Jan. 6 Capitol riot

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — An Ohio man is going to prison after admitting to assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol.

Kyle Andrew Campbell, 31, of Columbus, was sentenced to four months in prison, four months of home confinement, 36 months of supervised release and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution by a U.S. District court on Nov. 1. He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of assaulting, resisting or impeding certain offices in July.

Court documents show Campbell and a companion traveled from Columbus to Washington, D.C., to attend the "Stop the Steal" rally at the Ellipse on the day of the vote certification. The two quickly joined a large crowd headed toward the Capitol.

Campbell was accused of trampling over a fence erected by U.S. Capitol Police before making his way to the West Plaza. He then stood in front of the mob, where he came face-to-face with officers trying to protect the Capitol. The crowd pushed him into an officer carrying a riot shield, who then pushed back. The rioter forcibly rushed and hit the officer and his shield several times before retreating.

"His actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election," a release from the U.S. Attorney's office said.

After the run-in with Capitol police, Campbell remained at the West Plaza for at least another hour, eventually going to the Upper West Terrace. The FBI arrested Campbell in December. He originally faced several misdemeanor offenses, including acts of physical violence in a restricted building or grounds and in the Capitol grounds or building.

Campbell was previously charged in 2015 with misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct in an unrelated local case. He pled guilty to an amended charge, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.

Since the Jan. 6 attacks, more than 1,532 individuals have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the Capitol. Those include more than 571 people charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, a felony.
