Columbus Middle School honored with Nebraska School Safety and Security Award
Columbus Middle School was awarded the Nebraska School Safety and Security Award at the Nebraska Safety and Security Summit held Thursday, Oct. 17, in Kearney.
This recognition highlights the school's exceptional efforts in maintaining a safe environment for students and staff.
The summit gathered educators, law enforcement officials, and safety experts from across Nebraska to discuss best practices and innovative strategies for improving school safety.
CMS was recognized for its response to a medical emergency on April 19, 2024, when the school hosted a Nebraska School Activities Association District Music event. During the event, a student from another district collapsed due to cardiac arrest. CMS staff promptly implemented the Standard Response Protocol, secured the building, and took on their assigned roles.
The school nurse, Katie Kruse, successfully revived the student with an active heartbeat before Emergency Medical Services arrived. The district's crisis team was also made available to support students, staff, and attendees in need of additional care.
In the days following the incident, CMS staff collaborated with Children's Hospital to debrief and analyze AED data to better support the affected student. This event exemplified how safety training and resources empowered staff to save a life.
"The group is very deserving of this award," Dr. Chip Kay, Superintendent of Columbus Public Schools, said in a news release. "While having plans is important, it takes extraordinary effort to execute them during critical, life-saving situations. Our staff truly excelled that day!"
CMS Principal Amy Haynes expressed pride in receiving the award, stating, "It reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff in creating a secure learning environment. Safety is a shared responsibility, and this recognition reaffirms our commitment to prioritizing the well-being of everyone who sets foot in Columbus Middle School."
The award ceremony featured remarks from Jay Martin, School Safety and Security Director, Nebraska Department of Education and presentations on the latest developments in school safety. CPS initiatives include regular safety drills, mental health support programs, and community engagement efforts such as speakers on topics such as Building a Better Digital Culture.
This recognition not only celebrates the school's achievements but also serves as an inspiration for ongoing improvements in safety practices throughout the state.
