Comal County begins construction on new women's shelter
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - New Braunfels is taking another step to support domestic violence survivors by creating a new shelter.
Today was the concrete pour for that shelter, set to be called the Crisis Center of Comal County.
The shelter is planned to be 30 thousand square feet and care for 90 women and children. This comes after its first shelter was destroyed in a fire in 2022.
Organizers say - it's about giving victims a safe place.
"Right now, if people call a hotline in Texas, there's a 50/50 split whether they'll find a place to stay," said Dr. Julie Strentzsch, CEO of the Crisis Center. "By adding this space, we make sure that they have a place to stay that's safe and free from harm."
Just last year, more than 200 people were killed by an intimate partner, with guns having been used in 63 percent of those murders.
The youngest victim was 15.
