Tree lighting

The Glen Alpine Women’s Club will hold its Annual Memorial Tree Lighting at 4:30 p.m. at the bandstand in downtown Glen Alpine.

TUESDAY, NOV. 28

DAY OF GIVING

Burke County United Way will host the annual 1BurkGives Giving Day on Tuesday, Nov. 28, from midnight to 11:59 p.m. 1BurkeGives is a 24-hour online fundraising event at 1BurkeGives.org . During the event 35 local nonprofit organizations from across Burke County will be participating, raising funds for a wide range of causes. During the event, donors can also track their favorite nonprofits on the leaderboard, help organizations win prizes, and check-in on the event schedule for a live drawing or an in-person happy hour somewhere in Burke County. Smart Start meeting

The NC Pre-K Committee of Burke County Smart Start will meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the Partnership office, located at 304 W. Union St. Meetings are open to the public. Christmas Parade

The town of Valdese will host its annual Christmas Parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street. The annual Christmas parade is known for kicking off an exciting calendar of holiday events in Valdese and the Town Council considers it a privilege to recognize Bruce Hawkins as the Grand Marshal. Hawkins has served as an influential member of the community as well as activist for the Civil Rights Movement.

Train Museum open house

The Piedmont & Western Railroad Museum located in the Old Rock School in Valdese, 400 Main St. W, will host its annual parade Open House from 9 a.m. to noon. The indoor railroad display is the largest in the state.

Christmas Parade

The town of Hildebran will hold its annual Christmas Parade at 1 p.m. The parade will begin at 202 S. Center St. Visit hildebranNC.com for more information.

Christmas Parade

The town of Glen Alpine will be held at 2 p.m. The lineup will begin on Pollard Avenue at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

TUESDAY, DEC. 5

Christmas Parade

The Morganton Downtown Development Association will hold the 2023 Christmas Parade on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. Floats, characters and marching bands will usher in the Christmas spirit as they parade around through downtown on Green and Sterling street.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 6

AARP meeting

AARP Chapter 3262 will have their annual Christmas dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 6. It will be held at the Morganton Community House starting at 11:30 a.m. A donation of a canned item for Burke United Christian Ministries is appreciated. The cost is $13 per person. Homemade desserts provided by members. Email or call 443-0857 to register to attend.

THURSDAY, DEC. 7

Tree lighting ceremony

The town of Valdese will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Old Rock School, 400 Main St. W, Valdese. The event will include a special music performance by the Valdese Elementary School Students, led by music teacher Brittany Schaffer. Free hot chocolate will be available for attendees. A rain date is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Dec. 8. This year the Town of Valdese is excited to honor former town mayor Jim Hatley with this special event. Children in the Valdese community were always a special priority for Hatley and the Valdese Town Council chose to dedicate the Town Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration in his honor.

NAACP meeting

The Burke County NAACP #5367 will be holding their annual meeting on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Mountain View Community Recreation Center located at 645 1st Street, Morganton, NC. All members are encouraged to attend the meeting. In addition to any citizens that are interested in joining the branch. Please keep in mind that because it is the flu season and the uptick in COVID reporting, COVID-19 protocols will be followed.

ABC Board meeting

The Valdese ABC Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Valdese ABC Store at 1018 W. Main St. in Valdese.

Christmas dinner

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Capt. Robert Douglas Avery Chapter 1116, will host its annual Christmas dinner from 5-6 p.m. The dinner will be paid for by the chapter.

CruiseUnifour Christian Ministries will be embarking on a cruise to Grand Turk and Dominican Republic. Members of the public are invited to join.
