Construction season isn't over quite yet, as major projects continue

The following is a round-up of current PennDOT road work and construction projects in northcentral Pa.:

Lycoming County

There will be lane restrictions this week on Interstate 180 in both directions in Loyalsock Township and Montoursville Borough for bridge inspections.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, a PennDOT bridge inspection crew will be performing an inspection of the bridge carrying I-180 eastbound over the Loyalsock Creek. Drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions two miles west of Exit 21 (Route 87 / Montoursville) in Montoursville Borough.

On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the crew will be inspecting the bridge carrying I-180 westbound over the Loyalsock Creek. Driver can expect alternating lane restrictions east of Exit 23 A / B (Warrensville Road / Third Street) in Loyalsock Township.

Work will be performed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both days.

Work on Second Street in Montgomery

Starting Wednesday, Nov. 6, a portion of Second Street (Route 54) will be closed in Montgomery Borough for a railroad crossing project.

Second Street will be closed between Montgomery Street (Route 405) and Henry Hand Drive, while Norfolk Southern Railway Company replaces the rail seal and asphalt crossing surface.

A detour using Route 405, Interstate 180, and Route 54 will be in place for the duration of the project.

Work on this project is anticipated to be completed on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Centre County

Excavation work on the Route 26 betterment project to reconstruct and widen the roadway will start Monday, Nov. 4. This companion project to the high-speed connector between Interstates 80 and 99 will support the regional freight economy and improve the reliability of roadway travel through the region.

The excavation work, consisting of clearing and grubbing vegetation and select tree removal, will impact traffic on Route 26 between the westbound interchange of Interstate 80 and Walt Road. The contractor will implement short-term lane closures during daylight hours.

Work to reconstruct and widen the roadway will not begin until the 2025 construction season.

Overall work on this project includes increasing the lane and shoulder width of Route 26, reconstruction of the existing roadway, drainage improvements, guide rail installation, and miscellaneous construction. Glenn O. Hawbaker of State College is the contractor on this $8.6 million project. PennDOT anticipates project completion in the fall of 2026.

Columbia County

A drilling project begins this week on Interstate 80 westbound in Scott and Mount Pleasant townships.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 4, the contractor will be performing drilling activities on I-80 westbound between the Route 487 / Lightstreet interchange (mile marker 236) and Route 42 / Buckhorn interchange (mile marker 232). Drivers can expect the right (driving) lane to be restricted where work is being performed.

Additional drilling will take place in the median near the bridges over Papermill Road, near mile marker 235. Drivers should anticipate the left shoulder to be closed while work is being performed.

Work will be performed between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursdays. Work on this project is anticipated to be completed by Friday, Nov. 22.

Interstate 80 Reconstruction Project

A multi-year reconstruction and resurfacing project continues on Interstate 80 eastbound, between mile markers 230 and 244 in Hemlock, Scott, and Mifflin Townships.

On Monday Nov. 4, the contractor will repair an area of roadway near eastbound mile marker 244 in Mifflin Township that was previously damaged by a crash. This work will occur between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., with an alternating lane restriction in place. This work is expected to be completed in one night.

Montour County

A portion of Route 54 will be closed this week in Danville Borough for inspection and maintenance of the tunnel that carries Route 54 under local roadways.

Starting at 11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 through 6 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, Route 54 will be closed in both directions between Front Street and Mahoning Street, while a PennDOT maintenance crew performs an inspection and maintenance work on the tunnel.

A detour using Route 11, Mill Street (Route 2054), and Front Street will be in place while work is being performed.

Tioga County

A two-year roadway improvement project continues on Water Street (Route 414), Blockhouse Road (Route 2005), and Williamson Road (Route 2007) in Liberty Borough and Liberty Township.

The week of Monday, Nov. 4, the contractor will be performing drainage and sidewalk work near the intersection of High Street (Route 414) and Blockhouse Road. Drivers can expect single lane conditions with flagging where work is being performed. Work will be performed during daylight hours, weather permitting.

Glenn O. Hawbaker is the prime contractor for this two-year $6.2 million roadway improvement project. Work on this project includes drainage work on Route 414 (High Street/Water Street) and Blockhouse Road, roadway reconstruction, retaining wall, sidewalks, curbing, and resurfacing of 1.7 miles of Williamson Road. Work is expected to be complete in November of 2025, weather permitting. Drivers can expect a winter shut down between construction seasons.

Drivers should be alert, cautious, and slow down through work zones. All work is weather-dependent.
