Crews discover body following Gentilly fire

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — An investigation is underway after crews discovered a body after extinguishing a fire in the Gentilly area on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The New Orleans Fire Department reported that crews responded to a fire at a shed near the intersection of Frenchman and Selma streets around 5 p.m.

At the scene, firefighters found the shed consumed by flames, with fire spreading to an occupied duplex and another shed.

Firefighters said damage to the duplex and additional shed was limited to the outside walls.

NOFD officials said seven fire trucks carrying 21 firefighters were used to put out the fire around 5:16 p.m.

According to NOFD crews, an unidentified body was found inside the shed where the fire originated after crews began "post fire overhaul operations."

The cause of the fire and the victim's death remain under investigation.
